[1] Founding Conservatives. David Lefer is out with a new book on some of the "unsung" (and "conservative") heroes of the American Revolution: John Dickinson, Robert Morris, Gouverneur Morris, etc (*). In 1769, Diderot wrote a review of Dickinson's Lettres d'un fermier de Pensylvanie; it begins with these words: "C'est une grande querelle que celle de l'Angleterre avec ses colonies. Savez-vous mon ami par où nature veut qu'elle finisse? Par une rupture" [see]. As for Gouverneur Morris, he was busy distributing copies of Thomas Paine's 1782 refutation of Raynal: see footnote 3 to this letter by Paine to Robert Morris.

[2] Badinter & Badinter. Il y a 25 ans, Elisabeth et Robert Badinter publiaient Condorcet. Un intellectuel en politique (Fayard, 1988). Je l'ai relu cette année. Le livre a très bien vielli, quoi qu'il devrait être lu avec un ouvrage publié un an plus tard : Condorcet. Mathématicien, économiste, philosophe, homme politique (Minerve, 1989). On trouve un grand plaisir à imaginer le séjour de Condorcet et d'Alembert à Ferney (1770), l'année « magique » du géomètre (1786), la rédaction de l'Esquisse (1793). Mais surtout, on saisit bien les conséquences majeures de la virtuelle disparition du pouvoir éxécutif en 1792 — conséquences courageusement anticipées par Raynal en mai 1791. Bravo les Badinter !

[3] L'Edda des islandois. Grâce, encore une fois, à Google Books, j'ai repéré le livre cité par le baron d'Holbach dans son article ISLANDE [voir]: il s'agit de l'INTRODUCTION A L'HISTOIRE DE DANNEMARC, SECONDE PARTIE, Contenant les Monumens de la Mythologie & de la Poésie des anciens peuples du Nord. Genève, 1763. L'auteur est le genevois Paul Henri Mallet (1730-1807). Pour son article, d'Holbach choisit une série d'aphorismes ; on les retrouve entre les pages 248 et 257 du livre.

[4] Enlightenment Shadows. At Alibri, the excellent bookshop in Barcelona, I saw this finely edited plaquette by Genevieve Lloyd (*). From the publishers: "The book is organized around interconnected close readings of a range of texts: Montesquieu's Persian Letters; Voltaire's Philosophical Dictionary; Hume's essay The Sceptic; Adam Smith's treatment of sympathy and imagination in Theory of Moral Sentiments; d'Alembert's "Preliminary Discourse" to the Encyclopedia--together with Diderot's entry on Encyclopedia; Diderot's Rameau's Nephew; and Kant's essay Perpetual Peace.
